After another nurse on her unit had to take medical leave for carpal tunnel, Veronica Pellegrino, a registered nurse working in Orthopedics, decided to do something about an overlooked, time consuming, injury prone practice at the bedside: opening blister pill packs. Repetitive motion hazards, the most common injury for nurses, occurs when an action is completed over and over without proper safe mechanics. With more than 260 million Americans taking prescription and non-prescription medication every day, almost everyone can relate to the struggle of opening blister pill packs, and nurses have to open hundreds of individual ones every day. Struggling to find hospital safe, portable, easy to use, and efficient ‘pill poppers,’ Popsy was born out of an understood need and necessity.
